***IMPORTANT NEWS***:
- There are and have been several instances in South Australia of Gynaecologists calling themselves UROGYNAECOLOGISTS when they ARE NOT CERTIFIED UROGYNAECOLOGISTS. This is against the law and any such instances should be reported to the Medical Board of Australia.
- You are advised to ensure that any Gynaecologist claiming to be a Urogynaecologist has the appropriate CU qualification [Certified Urogynaecologist] – Certified by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

- Surgery should be as little as necessary but as much as required.
- Seek a second opinion if multiple procedures [including pre-operative laparoscopy to assess prolapse] are suggested . Do not be coerced into unnecessary procedures.
- Be very wary of any Gynaecologist charging excessive fees for multiple operations and be very sure that the surgery offered appropriately addresses the symptoms and problem[s].
- Destructive procedures such as ‘Hydro-distension of the Bladder’ [stretching the bladder], ‘Dilatation of the Urethra’ and Urethrotomy’ are of little or no benefit in the female and may lead to other problems! They should be avoided.
- Seek a second opinion if procedures such as ‘Vaginal Rejuvenation’ or ‘Vaginal Reconstruction’ are suggested and ensure that any suggestion of ‘Labioplasty’ is necessary from a symptomatic perspective and does not include surgery to the Labia Majora. - I have recently seen some very disturbing results of surgery, almost amounting to mutilation of the genital organs, by inappropriate labioplasty.
- Do not hesitate to seek a ‘second opinion’ should you have any concerns or doubts about the necessity &/or cost of any planned surgery.
